Port Douglas deserves a Maritime Museum.
Add your name.
Port Douglas has one of the most distinctive maritime histories in Australia — shaped by lighthouse keepers, pearl luggers, reef expeditions and generations of people who have lived and worked on these waters. The Low Isles Preservation Society is working to create a permanent place to tell that story. We need your support to make it happen.
Why this matters
Our vision is for a Port Douglas Maritime Museum and Cultural Precinct — not a dusty room of artefacts, but a vibrant, living space for storytelling, education, art and community. Think oral history portrait galleries, interactive reef displays, ghost net sculptures, a yarning circle, touring exhibitions from the Australian National Maritime Museum, and a maritime trail winding through Port Douglas itself.
The stories exist. The artefacts exist. The community goodwill exists. We have a detailed Project Roadmap with eight stages from concept to launch. What we need now is to demonstrate that Port Douglas wants this — and is ready for it.
Before a single grant is submitted or a location confirmed, the most powerful thing we can do is show that the community is behind this. Funding bodies, local government and potential partners all ask the same question: does the community support it? Your signature answers that with a resounding yes.
By signing, you are saying:
- Port Douglas deserves a permanent place to celebrate and preserve its maritime heritage
- Our stories, our artefacts and our history matter
- You support LIPS in pursuing the funding, partnerships and venue needed to make this a reality
- You believe in a vibrant cultural future for Port Douglas — for locals, visitors and future generations

Our Project Roadmap 2026 outlines eight stages from concept to launch — from branding and location through to community engagement, funding, installation and opening day. It also includes design inspiration, potential display concepts and ideas for connecting the whole community in the project. Download it or read it on our Maritime Precinct page.
