Three seasons worth knowing

Pied imperial pigeon nesting
September – March
Pied imperial pigeon season
Up to 25,000 PIPs nest on Woody Island. LIPS volunteers conduct monthly counts at dusk. Woody Island is closed to visitors during this period.
Green turtle on the sandy flats
September – March
Green turtle nesting season
Green turtles nest and forage in the sheltered Low Isles lagoon. LIPS collaborates with JCU researchers to monitor nesting activity and turtle movements.
LIPS volunteers
Year-round
Volunteer & conservation programs
Relief caretaking, reef monitoring, marine debris collection and the Maritime Precinct project run throughout the year. New volunteers always welcome.
